Come to the table

Corinthians 11:23-34

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is brokenfor you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

33 Therefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come.

SERMON NOTES

Introduction: The Lord's table is another name used to describe the Lord's Supper. In this very familiar passage, Paul gives guidelines as to how believers should come to the table. Come, we must, but we should do so

Participating Worthily in the Lord's Supper

1 Corinthians 11:23-32 (NKJV)

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood.

SERMON NOTES:

The apostle Paul was writing to a church that had become careless in the celebration of the Lord's Supper. To correct the error and to provide guidelines for others to follow, he set conditions on how to participate in the communion service in a worthy manner. Paul challenged the Corinthian believers to take the 3 kinds of LOOK.

  • The ______________________________ look (vs. 23-26a)
  • The ______________________________ look (v. 26b)
  • The ______________________________ look (vs. 27-32)

Do Not Be Anxious

1 Peter 5:6-11 (NKJV)

6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

The Life that Ceases Not to Yield Fruit

jeremiah 17:5-8

5 Thus says the Lord:

“Cursed is the man who trusts in man
And makes flesh his strength,
Whose heart departs from the Lord.
6 For he shall be like a shrub in the desert,
And shall not see when good comes,
But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness,
In a salt land which is not inhabited.
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord.
8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

SERMON NOTES:

The very first command that God gave to man was, "Be fruitful." God demands, desires and delights in fruitfulness - physically as well as spiritually. This is not just a principle found in the New Testament but is also a recurrent truth in the Old Testament. let's consider this passage from Jeremiah on the life that is fruitful in 3 ways:

  1. It's ___________________________(v. 7)
  2. It's ___________________________(vs.5,6, 8a)
  3. it's ___________________________ (v. 8b)
